The bronze was commissioned by Dr James Cope who raised the money by Wilkes devotees

and unveiled in 1988. Wilkes was  a Member of Parliament, Lord Mayor and a  a champion of English Freedom.

Wilkes, an imposing figure, was marked by a strabismus, a squint, seen here in his portrait.

A replica of the figure was unveiled at Wilkes University in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania in
1995.
